Senator Schumer calls for federal aid for Broadway in Times Square rally

Broadway News: U.S. Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Broadway leaders gathered in Times Square Friday to show support for the Save Our Stages Act.

The bipartisan bill, co-sponsored by Schumer, would provide grants of up to $12 million to live venue operators, producers, promoters or talent representatives whose businesses were impacted by COVID-19. Speaking at the foot of the TKTS stairs, Schumer said the likelihood of the bill passing is improving due to its planned inclusion in a larger pandemic relief package.

The last few months have had a devastating impact on the theater industry in particular, given how much the industry thrives on human connections and social interactions. Employees have lost jobs, had their contracts nullified, and people have not had the chance to experience live theater in so long.
That is why it feels so heartwarming and thoughtful for a few influential to come together to help the industry. The bill proposed by Senator Schumer is aimed at providing about $12 million dollars to the industry, in an attempt to support it and the employees. It seems like a possibility too, given how the bill is aimed at being incorporated into the larger relief package, a package aimed at helping basically everyone affected by this pandemic. Hopefully, Senator Schumer is successful in this endeavor of his, because god only knows how important this is and how very impactful it can be for the theater industry.

The pandemic has been disastrous for the theater industry. Nearly the entire industry is now unemployed. As normal theater probably cannot resume until the vaccine which may be years away the industry is struggling to survive. Theater isn't just important for those in the industry and audience members, it is important to the economy as a whole. It makes sense that Senator Schumer is proposing a theater relief bill for these reasons. I could also see it potentially becoming a bipartisan effort if pitched in a way to support the economy. The theater industry is desperately in need of support and aid for it to survive. I truly hope that this bill will be passed to help support those in the industry because they truly need the support. I am curious how the money will be implemented and if it will be effective. But right now I believe that anything will help to make a difference in supporting those in the industry.
