Broadway News: Amid a broader industry reckoning, the Stewart/Whitley casting office has publicly pledged to bring greater racial equity to their staff and working environment.
The casting office has committed to ending unpaid internships in their office, participating in anti-racism training and hiring a Black person, Indigenous person or person of color as their next casting director or associate, among other measures.

This is a great step forward for the Broadway community. Such an applauded casting company right now, after Hadestown's Tony sweep last year, taking steps to make Broadway more representative of our world will surely cause a ripple effect. It is important that they recognized that even if the casts look diverse, factors like colorism and other ingrained biases would be less of an issue. It will also feel more authentic for the roles they are being cast into, instead of a performative diversity where BIPOC actors are cast just for the sake of seeming diverse. Of course, though, this needs to go beyond just casting. We need BIPOC-led production companies that prioritize BIPOC stories, BIPOC directors who would understand the experience being portrayed, and BIPOC stylists who know how to style natural hair. By making a public commitment to behind-the-scenes diversity, the Stewart/Whitley casting office can be held accountable for the promises they have made, as all theater-making companies should be.
