Travels of a Scenic Artist and Scholar. Day 1 at The Tabor Opera House. September 21, 2020.

Drypigment.net: Today was my first day on site at the Tabor Opera House. I am in town to document the historic scenery collections in the attic; last spring I documented the scenery collections on the stage. This is such a very important collection, in both in the scope of American theatre history and world theatre history.

Inventorying, archiving, and reorganizing stock and items in storage seems to be something that a lot of theatres are taking the time to do in these quarantine times. I think this is a quality use of time for staff if they can follow appropriate safety protocols and there are systems worth reorganizing or items that need cataloging. I think it is important that if you’re going to reorganize something, it needs to be because it is for a purpose, and not just to move things around because you can. I know the Carnegie Scenic office was constantly talking about reorganizing and cataloging what's in the office, or other places, but we rarely get around to it. Sean, Ben, and DR were able to do some amazing cleaning up in the Scene Shop because there was no one around and no shows to be built. There were people who did a ton of cataloging and reorganizing at the warehouse that will inevitably be very useful when future classes need to pull stock for shows. I’m glad that there can be a little productivity even when everything can feel really hopeless in our industry.
