I loved reading this article, and though I am not exceptionally well versed in sound, I still thought there were many compelling parts of this article that made it really interesting to consider. First of all, I have been very intrigued by van life and the idea of van conversion for a long time. There is something so interesting about creating a well crafted home, with expensive finishes and extensive planning all in a van. I think it is also very interesting what the symbol of the van stands for in pop culture, and how this is being capitalized upon for these performances. The van has long been a symbol of freedom, movement, and adventure, and these performances certainly benefit from this general connotation of what the meaning of the van is. Additionally, it is amazing to see how a van can so quickly become a performance space with the use of specific equipment, and while obviously there is some real planning that must go into creating a performance space like this, there is without a doubt a great return and benefit.
I chose to comment on this article because I am always interested in unique ways to perform and continue working despite the COVID-19 Pandemic. Of course, this small, performing out of a modified van solution only works because she is performing to small, intimate audiences, so this method in theory would not work for any performer whose name would draw more than, say, 200 people. However, this allows her and the crew to safely travel from one outdoor venue to another- to practically anywhere in the country, and play weather permitting. But I also really enjoy the artistic vision of the van, the colors, the imagery, the fact the lights are controlled by an iPhone- all makes the performance seem carefully planned, and not a child of the pandemic. The article highlights an impressive list of equipment that details a nice sound quality, but truly I am unaware of what the specifics mean because it is out of my wheelhouse. But a bright pink set that travels the UK and brings music to the people? What’s not to love.
