How 'Ratched's' Production Design Team Went Sinister Glam

Variety: Ryan Murphy had a very specific look in mind for Lucia State Hospital, a mental institution that’s at the center of his new Netflix series, “Ratched” (premiering Sept. 18), a “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” prequel and origin story for Nurse Ratched (Sarah Paulson) that takes place in 1947.

I spent this past weekend binging Ratched on Netflix. I first read One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at way too young of an age (apparently my sixth grade English teacher thought I was mentally prepared for such a book….) and I have always had very specific images in mind of all the characters and their lives. While some of these were shaped by the movie and theater stills I have seen over the years, when I went to watch Ratched - it was not what I was expecting at all. What I saw reminded me a lot of some of Ryan Murphy’s other projects - however, while it maybe wasn’t the imagery I had expected when thinking of Nurse Ratched’s origin story - the production design was so beautiful. The colors were incredibly vivid, and it exemplified past, present and future wealth for many of the characters. It was interesting to read about how they had to construct the hospital on a soundstage and replicate a real life building - I think in my life, when I can’t get something I’ve just been told to go somewhere else - but in this case they didn’t settle and just recreated it.

I just fell in LOVE with this article. Watching this show over the past couple days, I have completely fallen in love with the production design. Reading about the direction of making it feel like an old hollywood-esque place turned into a mental institution is genius for this story. Having to recreate the hotel they picked was obviously less than ideal but having the budget that Ryan Murphy usually has, I expected it. I’ve fallen off of his works because of my disappointment with later AHS seasons, but I was surprised when I watched Ratched. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest was a favorite of mine to watch with my Uncle when I was little so I was intrigued about the show itself. While I have my own thoughts about the show, the acting is spectacular, especially Miss Sophie Okonedo!! The production design is very visually stunning and the reimagined spaces make me like the show even more.

The production design for the Netflix series "Ratched" is a visually stunning and mesmerizing experience, transporting viewers into a world of psychological horror and suspense. The show is set in the 1940s and follows the story of Nurse Mildred Ratched, played by Sarah Paulson, as she navigates the mental health care system of the time. The show's production design is a crucial element in creating the show's eerie, unsettling atmosphere. The sets are incredibly detailed, from the sterile, clinical interiors of the mental hospital to the opulent, art deco design of the hotel. The color palette is super cool, with deep blues, greens, and purples creating a sense of unease. From Ratched's impeccably tailored suits to the patients' drab hospital gowns, the costumes are also visually pleasing for the show. Overall, the production design of "Ratched" is a masterclass in creating a mood and atmosphere that enhances the story and captivates the audience.
