Variety: During the final episode of Variety‘s Sustainability in Hollywood event presented by Toyota Mirai, Rob Bredow, senior vice president and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic, and Janet Lewin, senior vice president and general manager at ILM and co-producer of “The Mandalorian,” talked to artisans editor Jazz Tangcay about how the virtual production of “The Mandalorian” has allowed the show to reduce its carbon footprint.

The Mandalorian was one of the most talked about shows last year. The acting, storyline, setting, visual expertise- everything involved was appreciated. That is why it seems only logical that the producers would want to further the scope of the show and its impact by incorporating production elements which will help the environment, making a huge statement in doing so.
Jon Favreau, in this article, has talked about how virtual production elements can be incorporated in a way where they enhance the visual experience offered by the show in a sustainable way. He talks about how visual settings can be used to a better scope with a virtual aspect because there is so much room to edit those locations, which is not quite possible in a real- life location without making huge changes to the location itself.
I hope further seasons of the Mandalorian strive to achieve this level of sustainability and yet continue to entertain the audiences.
Right off the bat, I am a huge fan of all things Star Wars. The Mandalorian was one of my favorite newly produced parts of the franchise (way better than the newer movies in my opinion). This new way of producing, doing the post-production work before shooting even begins, is not only a game changer for big budget films that are set in worlds other than Earth, but also came at the perfect time. With basically the entire entertainment industry on a shut down right, the fact that The Mandalorian is still managing to complete projects right now is insane. The collaboration aspect of producing is super important and their ability to maintain this wish ease is shocking. Hopefully this system, entitled Stage Craft, will be integrated into film making for other future projects set in the Star Wars cinematic universe or otherwise. I am thoroughly excited for season 2!!
