KQED: In early March, even before officials issued the Bay Area’s shelter-in-place order, theaters had been suspending shows and shuttering their doors due to the coronavirus.
Within the chaos, a small bright spot appeared on social media. Local luminary and popular playwright Lauren Gunderson announced a playwriting seminar on Facebook Live, completely free, for anyone who cared to tune in.

Knowing how difficult it has been recently, I am really grateful to still be in the theater business. I know it can be very difficult to find jobs but this is such a supportive and strong community I am happy to have known. Along with the supportiveness, people are constantly sharing their art and their stories. This is what this article is shedding light on. Many playwrights from the Bay Area are offering free classes to access online. These videos can be accessed for up and coming writers or just those who want to know how playwriting works. It is very nice to see more and more people supporting this idea and bringing the community of theater and beyond to be in a positive environment. When they easily could be offering these classes for money, they decide to let anyone access them free of charge. During this quarantine, when I feel so trapped it is nice to know there are options to escape and still continue to grow and learn.
