Behind the Scenes Launches Entertainment Industry Therapist Finder

Lighting&Sound America Online - News: The Behind the Scenes Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Initiative, in partnership with HelpPRO, announces the launch of the Entertainment Industry Therapist Finder btshelp.org/findatherapist. The Finder only includes listings for mental health professionals who have previously worked with clients in the entertainment industry or who have personal professional experience in the industry themselves.

I really love how this industry is coming together in these tough times. I had heard of and actually tried out the therapist search website, but found no options I liked, but I hadn’t heard of the industry specific one. I think this would be really beneficial for me and many others. This past semester I had actually started going to someone at Caps on campus and it was only one session before Corona cut the semester short, but that one session was helpful. I think I could see myself going back at some point in the future, but I probably wouldn’t go to caps. One thing I realized is that I need someone who is a psychologist and a psychiatrist because I can only change so much without external assistance. I think having access to this type of service in the future will be very useful and I hope it continues to expand and develop.

Through these news articles, I've been following the saga of Behind the Scenes developing initiatives to help the industry's mental health situation as a whole, and it's been one of my favorite things about doing comments. From my memory, this is one of the most tangible, important things that they have done in this initiative. Not that the previous things have not been good. or important, but this therapist finder is something that will be so useful. I've used multiple therapist and psychiatrist search engines in the past, and they've worked out pretty well for me. But, having a therapist finder that is specific to the entertainment industry is a great idea. Working in entertainment provides very specific challenges and the more specific your therapist can be about addressing your stresses, the better. It makes me really happy that things like this are happening. This will change the landscape and conversation around mental health in the entertainment industry and I really think we will see a tangible result from this.

This is a really awesome and well needed tool. Coming from the perspective of a CMU student, where dealing with campus counseling has an absolute nightmare most of the time (regardless of whether it is with scheduling or blatant rudeness from staff), it is nice to see people making an effort to create an entertainment-friendly network of mental health providers. One of the hardest things has been finding a therapist that has flexible hours and meeting options, and who understands the industry as it stands. I speak from experience when I say going to a therapist who does not (and does not try to) understand the particular stressors of an entertainment career sucks. A lot. Hopefully this tool will help a lot of people, who I am sure badly need said help right now. The best thing we can do as a community is support one another, and this is a very clear cut way of doing just that.

Mental health should always be amongst a person's highest priorities. It's actually quite disappointing the amount of people who don't recognize how important mental health is. I think it's amazing that the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Initiative and HelpPRO are making finding a good mental health professional more accessible and much simpler. Finding a mental health professional who works in your area, is available at the right times, and who specializes with and understands your career or lifestyle is very difficult in my opinion so I appreciate that these organizations have put in so much thought into the different factors that go into improving your mental health. This is also a great time for this as well. Being stuck inside and not being able to do the things you love or see the people you love all while there's a global pandemic going on around you can take an immense toll on your mental health and it's extremely important to keep tabs on that in order to make life during the COVID-19 crisis as least miserable as possible.
