CMU Career Center Adapts to Help Students Facing Uncertain Summer
www.cmu.edu/news: Around mid-March, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) polled its members about their response to the coronavirus epidemic. Ninety percent of responding employers expected to maintain their internship programs without change. By the last week of March, that number dropped to 74 percent. At the start of April, results were even more dramatic: Only 35 percent reported moving forward with on-site internships as planned.

The CPDC at Carnegie Mellon University is a great resource for the university's large student body to find jobs and internships. However, with the pandemic wreaking havoc on the economy and top employers, many student's internships have been cancelled. I applied to 4 different ones and all have been cancelled for the summer, citing concerns about the pandemic or low resources to have interns. It is really nice that the CPDC has switched gears and is offering virtual sessions about interviewing online, or what else students can do if they do not have an internship this summer. I also like that the university is keeping in contact with it's top employers during the pandemic, even if the company cannot hire anyone new, they can still be in contact with the university. My biggest sympathies go to the graduates of 2020, who now might not have jobs to look forward to in this new landscape of hiring. Many of my friends in the creative art industries, which is almost completely shut down, have grim prospects for their immediate futures.
