Studio Tour: Inside a New York City Hatmaker’s Workshop

medium.com: The art of hat-making “has gotten very popular,” says Brandon Franklin, “but unfortunately, you can’t just become a hatmaker by watching YouTube videos.” It’s true that the multibillion-dollar industry has been on an upward swing in recent years, but old-school specialists like Franklin, who runs bespoke shop B.M. Franklin & Co, are still a niche subset.

Why is this in Airbnb magazine? Is his studio also an Airbnb? Because if so, that is amazing. Anyways, this article is so cool! I feel like I very rarely see articles about tradespeople who are operating traditionally because a lot of times we take them for granted. Articles are always about innovative new ways of doing the craftsman skills that have been developed for generations, but I think that reading about a person who is still making things the traditional way and making it a successful business in the 21st century is probably as or even more impressive. Franklin's shop and practices are a reminder of how much people are willing to pay for handmade items, both because of the durability and quality but also because of current fashion trends. Even though people sometimes look down on people who spend a lot of money on artisan items, it supports these amazing people who take the time to make quality items and take business away from fast fashion.
