Vigo festival collapse in Spain injures hundreds

BBC News: More than 300 people have been injured, five seriously, after a section of wooden platform collapsed at an urban sports and music festival in Spain.

It had been packed with people watching a rap artist at the two-day O Marisquiño event in the north-west city of Vigo, in Galicia.

Police confirmed that there were no known fatalities.

This is a twist. I am curious what they determine the cause of the collapse to be but in the meantime, I am glad to hear that the response team was on it and that it wasn’t too serious. This seems like an odd place to do a concert though and you might thing that something like this could potentially happen. It is a wooden structure; it will be packed full and likely with a lot of force hitting it as people jump and move around on it. You would think to have someone look at it and see if it can handle what it is about to experience. If not, you could then choice to reinforce it or move the location. Either way, this probably could have been avoided but it is good to know that people were on it as soon as possible and that it hasn’t caused any death as far as is currently known.

This is the second concert mishap/disaster article that I am commenting on for this week. First, the crowd barrier collapsed. But now, the entire floor collapses, swallowing up hundreds, injuring more than 300 of those people. It really makes one wonder if the concert planner/organizer put any thought into the structural security of this platform. They must’ve had at least a rough estimate as to what the turnout for the concert would be, and they knew where the audience would be standing to view the concert. If they knew this information, why would they not check the structural integrity of the platform? Perhaps when it was built, it would’ve been able to hold a greater load, but especially considering the fact that it was a wooden deck next to the sea, the age of the deck itself could have a big impact on the structural integrity of the platform. Hundreds of lives were put at stake. Fortunately, there were no fatalities in the accident, but there were still more than 300 injuries, at least five of which were serious.

First off, I am glad to hear there are no known fatalities from this incident. To be somewhere that is meant for you to relax and have some sort of enjoyment, to only have everything underneath you collapse and you and everyone around you are scared of your life would be the worst feeling ever. Many of the people affected were teenagers just trying to have fun but after the incident, many of them lost their phones and bags and some of them even fell into the water. This article didn't say anything about what caused the platform to collapse other than it was still undecided but I hope they find out soon. Maybe it was a design flaw or even a flaw of putting it up, but either way, this should never happen and be prevented by having a limit of people of the platform. Hopefully everyone was safe and everyone gathered their belongings, I hope to never have to read about something like this again.
