Highlights from the 2019 Denver Immersive Retrospectacle

noproscenium.com: The 2019 Denver Immersive Retrospectacle was created to tide over the Mile High community’s hungry appetite for a follow up to the inaugural 2018 Denver Immersive Summit last fall.

The Retrospectacle was emceed by the delightfully funny and charming David Thomas, otherwise known as Denver’s Professor of Fun, which was an obvious and appropriate programming choice.

It’s crazy to think about the possibilities when it comes to immersive theatre. Considering how new it is as a theatrical concept and the few successful long running immersive shows that exist - its an entire world that has barely been explored. The 2019 Denver Immersive Retrospectacle seems like the place to be. The numerous types of immersive experiences that were present, theatrical, escape room, and simply interactive installations show the variety within the theme of “immersive.” I think the tenants of immersive that Andrew Novick defined are intelligent and thoughtful. Definitely things to consider when creating an immersive piece. Novick also goes on to make a strong point. Let something be immersive without giving it that explicit distinction. It’s like if someone wants to be famous so they become an actor. You don’t want to call it immersive and then go about doing so. Make something and if it’s immersive - awesome. If not, that’s okay too.
