Actors' Equity to Deny Membership to Strikebreakers
www.broadwayworld.com: Following the announcement this week that Equity's National Council has authorized a strike against the Broadway League for all Development work, Actors' Equity Association is advising all non-union actors and stage managers that they will be prohibited from joining the union in the future if they agree to take work that is subject to Equity's strike.

While I understand where Equity is coming from here, I think it's privileged and narrow minded to tell people who are not even members of Equity yet that they will be banned from the union for breaking the strike. It's often very difficult for non equity actors to get consistent enough work in New York to actually make a living, and while it makes sense to prohibit those who are actually members, and therefore supported, from participating, it seems unfair to require people who are simply trying to become members from working with no work list directors. I think that any choice actors make about who they work with before they are officially members of equity should not impact their chances of becoming equity, because many actors have to take work where they can find it, even if the conditions aren't up to equity standards. I do understand that equity is trying to pack as much of a punch as they can, but I think there are better ways to do that.
