Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: “I got ’em,” yelled Rick Foerster, thrusting his arms upward and walking away with “Hamilton” tickets for his family.
He was No. 7 in line but first away from a ticket window just after 9 a.m. Monday, when tickets officially went on sale for “Hamilton,” which will be at the Benedum Center for 27 days and 32 performances Jan. 1-27.

This article may seem overly dramatic in its representation of ticket buyers, but it is surprisingly accurate. Every time I go to New York, my mom and I try pre-research all the rush lines, online lotteries, and current features on in the TKTS booth. We try to find the best deals to maximize our travel budget and see as much theatre as possible. I have often heard of the ticket-buying hype for concerts and backstage passes, but it wasn’t until Hamilton that I really noticed it was possible in the theatre world. The obsession with finally holding on to a set of tickets is clearly so important that people were lining up in the middle of the nigh for it (1:30am!). It could be considered excessive, but the first man interviewed in line said he was buying it for his two teenagers as a Christmas gift because they know and love every word of the soundtrack. My mom always tells me that she would rather give me the gift of an experience, than an object that I will soon lose interest in. She and my dad would much rather fill me with memories than toys and clothing. So while I would probably not stay up all night for it, I understand the logic of working hard to give a valuable experience to someone you love. (225)
I’m excited to finally be seeing Hamilton when it comes to Pittsburgh, I got tickets through the CMU group pre-sale. If I hadn’t I doubt I would’ve been committed enough to get a ticket. I think it is crazy that the hype over Hamilton has lasted this long, and I think that really speaks to the quality of the show. People are seeing it and having their expectations met/ surpassed by the production. You’d expect the hype to decrease if people see it and it isn’t everything they imagined it would be based on how it was pitched. At this point I’m starting to wonder how popular Hamilton will be in five to ten years. I doubt it will still be this big of a deal to get Hamilton tickets since eventually enough people will have had the opportunity to have seen it. I imagine it will be like Wicked or Lion King in terms of popularity.
Hamilton is a producers dream. This show has been running for a couple years but is still a just a big hit as it was when it played Off-Broadway . This show has been sold out and will be sold out for years to come. It makes sense that the touring shows are also doing extremely well This show has been playing for a couple years but yet still have hundreds in line to get tickets for each touring spot. I know the Pittsburgh spot has had issues with tickets since Hamilton became apart of the season subscription and not everyone was able to get tickets. I think the best way to get tickets for this show was going in person since the online sale had over 70,000 people waiting. Im hoping most of these tickets are used and not just being resold for a higher price. Hamilton will be here for a couple weeks and im confident that the whole run will be sold out.
It is hard to believe that this show is still dominating the box office. I remember all the way back to my freshman year when Hamilton was sweeping the nation, and now that the touring production is coming to Pittsburgh the hype starts all over again. Don’t get me wrong the show is fantastic, and I can’t wait to see it again here in Pittsburgh, but I truly cannot believe people are waiting this long. I would instead enter myself in the lottery every day until I won (don’t worry it is possible to make it from Pittsburgh to NYC in time for curtain—I timed it).
At the end of the day, it is nice to see the Pittsburgh community so enthused by this smashing hit and I hope that the long wait proves to be worth every minute. After reading this article, I can't help but feel guilty about how easy it was to get these tickets. Perks of being a CMU student I suppose.
