Impressions of MuseumNext NYC 2018
ExhibiTricks: The Museum Exhibit Design Blog: I attended my first MuseumNext Conference that just happened in Manhattan. MuseumNext often bills itself with the tagline "The Future of Museums" and while this NYC edition had a decidedly digital bent, I was pleased to discover that not everything in the museum world's future appears to be digital.

A lot of museums are pushing interactive and immersive experiences to remain relevant in this day and age. It used to be mainly children’s museums or traveling exhibits (typically science based) that encouraged visitor participation, but now museums are competing more with pop up experiences and the like, places with a certain unique wow factor which draws a crowd. Museums need to find something of their own to continue operating and educating successfully. As someone who’d rather remain in the physical world more often than not, I too am glad the future is not entirely digital. I think a deeper connection to both the experience and the information can come from an analog interaction than from the digital. Also if everyone starts using AR and VR it no longer becomes unique, instead it transitions to overdone and tacky. A healthy, limited dose of technological integration I believe only furthers innovation by pushing people to find their own new ways of bringing visitors in.
