Igniting Creativity with CLO's SPARK Festival

Pittsburgh in the Round: Mention the CLO to most Pittsburghers’, and they think of the series of Broadway Musicals presented during the summer months at the Benedum. Some people will mention the CLO Cabaret at Theatre Square. A few folks who are in the know will speak of its training program, the CLO Academy. Theatre insiders will bring up the CLO’s reputation as an original producer and co-producer of musicals such as An American in Paris, Kinky Boots and On Your Feet. While these are Broadway-sized shows, the CLO is also instrumental in developing small musicals.

This article is extremely heartwarming. I am so glad to once again see the Pittsburgh theatre community take charge when it comes to New Works. Anytime someone asks me does Pittsburgh have a great theatre scene, I emphatically say yes. So many “successful theatre scenes” ignore new works, which is upsetting but Pittsburgh time and time again promotes New Works. It is great also to see musical New Works that have small casts. After working for a local, not for profit SPT theatre, I have learned the value of small casts. So many musicals, in general, have casts of 15 or more. For companies trying to produce musicals without breaking the bank, New Works’ musicals are the way to go. They provide the small casts that SPT and other smaller regional houses need to survive and give audience members musicals that they might want to see overseeing a play. I am so glad that I read this article because I am definitely going to try to see some of the New Works in the SPARK Festival.
