Dance preview: Texture Contemporary Ballet wraps 7th season with 'Rushing Horizons'

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "Rushing Horizons" isn't just the title of Texture Contemporary Ballet's last program of its seventh season. It's also a glimpse into what keeps artistic director Alan Obuzor motivated.

I really enjoyed reading this article as it gave me some more insight into an area of the Pittsburgh arts that I have yet to learn a lot about, which is the dance scene. Although I have read a few PTM articles about the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, this article on Texture Contemporary Ballet gave me an idea of the more modern, forward looking companies that I might find around the city. The show, "Rushing Horizons" seems to be built off of a great, forward looking idea that the artistic director has come up with, and I do think that dance shows are always more interesting and beautiful to watch when there is a coming together of modernity and a traditional style like ballet. I also liked what Alan Obuzor, the artistic director, had to say about dancers choreographing themselves. After hearing from some of the Alkestis actors during a Conservatory Hour critique last week about their experience of being given a chance to start staging some scenes themselves, I can see how valuable an experience like this might be. I hope to see "Rushing Horizons" myself!

I really enjoy reading articles about art in the Pittsburgh community. I really enjoy the perspective of Obuzor in that he supports the artists in giving them opportunities to choreograph. It is like in a dance company how it is in many creative groups. When everyone knows how each position works, and have a sense of importance and attachment to each step in the process, the overall outcome of the group is much greater. Another part of this article that I am really curious about is the expanse to which the dancers can be involved in the creative vision of the show. Madeline Kendall’s work in painting the costumes left me especially curious. I really want to seek out Texture Contemporary Ballet’s work around Pittsburgh. I feel like the company has truly worked to develop an inclusive and supportive community in which everyone is truly recognized as artists in their own right that collaborate to create a beautiful final product.
