Top 10 Power Tool Innovations of 2017
coptool.com: It was actually pretty hard to narrow it down to just 10 as we saw a lot of innovations this year from many many manufacturers. We are sticking with tools that actually hit the shelves and were used by professionals in 2017, not launched at a trade show but won’t be here until 2018 or later. We are just going to do a quick rundown of each as well as talk a little at the end for hopes for this year’s (2018) tool innovations.

We received articles for most of these power tool upgrades and innovations this year and I commented on a fair share of them as well. The usual front runners are Milkwaulkee, Makita, and DeWalt with so many products being pushed out every year this isn’t a surprise to see them dominating the list. I am surprised to see DeWalt’s air compressor as number one on the list, but to be fair, it is a pretty cool invention. My surprise mostly comes from previous years’ lists of this kind featuring solely power drills and saws and storage units. I remember one year there was a super cool multifunctional storage unit with cupholders that everyone went crazy over. There are some companies on this list I don’t quite recognize but their tools seem to be getting the job done well in order to appear on lists with Makita and the other big guys in the industry.
I always love tool lists. The people who write them are always so passionate about tools and their uses. After reading through the list, I weirdly kind of like the only one that's not a tool; the Makita storage system. The article reads: "While storage solutions are nothing new for professional tool brands we do think the PACKOUT system has really changed the game and set the bar much higher for these systems. Much more tough and rugged than other popular systems from Dewalt, Ridgid and even Festool Systainer. The demand has been crazy with back orders possibly out until February. How is this a “Power Tool” innovation? We have seen some M12 FUEL Tools packed into the small PACKOUT already, M18 FUEL will be coming in Larger PACKOUTS very soon at aggressive pricing. Will it change the way we buy and store Power Tools? We have just 1 request for Milwaukee, please make an addition to the lineup with a Roller Cooler". I love being organized and to be able to have a flexible storage space for all tools needed for a job.
Battery powered chain saw, sure. Battery powered router, sure. Cordless compressor, sure. But all the rest are not innovative. I post this comment at least once a semester and I post it with passion every time. These "tool innovations" are tool improvements or upgrades, not innovative. I think innovative should be something completely new, not just a mild improvement like and higher powered motor. The battery powered chainsaw isn't really too innovative, but I think this is one of the first battery chainsaws made for heavy duty use. The battery router is good because battery routers are very new this year. And a cordless compressor is great, but kind of a bummer that you still need an airline. A really innovative design would be if there was a way to send air from a compressor to a tool without an air line, but I suppose that is probably impossible. I hope that some of the tools they are excited for in the coming year prove to be more innovative, and lees just improvements.
