NBC's 'Jesus Christ Superstar' stars John Legend in live musical

www.usatoday.com: In a bare church basement lined with empty chairs and coffee cups, Jesus Christ Superstar Live is nearing its climactic finish.

Jesus, played by singer/actor John Legend, has just arrived at the Last Supper, where he passes his disciples an empty bottle of wine and a roll of paper towels.

While I’ve never seen ‘Jesus Christ Superstar,’ anything with John Legend is amazing. He is such a thoughtful actor and performer. I also adore live musicals. They are GIANT brilliant productions that are really incredible. Every time I’ve watched live musicals I’ve been really astonished at the ability to execute really awesome sets, perfect timing, and decent singing and dancing numbers. So, a live musical WITH John Legend? Amazing. Also, the photos look really beautiful. The costume color palette is neutral toned, the lighting has some beautiful muted warms and colds, and the set looks simplistic but also incredible. Live musicals are very different from regular productions because there is a lot more preparation for a singular performance compared to months of performing. It’s important to get it right on the first try. I am actually gonna watch this on Easter Sunday. I am super excited to see this all come together.

I think that the idea of showing live theater performances on tv to be very weird and a little cool at the same time. I don’t think that a remote viewing of a piece of theater lets you feel as connected as live theater is meant to. In fairness though, I’ve also never seen one of these performances either. I can’t say that I am surprised that the viewing numbers have been lowering as time goes on simply because the novelty of the first time has worn off. This performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar” sounds like it has the potential to carry its weight due to the A list names attached of John Legend, Sarah Bareilles, and Alice Cooper. I do like the fact that they are going on tour with the same cast after the show airs simply because I don’t think that it would be proper theater without having a live audience for the majority of their shows. We will see how this goes for them.
