Stagecraft: Wiring The Stage Efficiently and Safely

ProSoundWeb: Among many of the recent entrants into the sound profession, I’ve noticed a lack of knowledge when it comes to wiring a stage.

Perhaps it’s due to a lot of sound engineering schools being essentially studio-based courses. Or maybe it’s simply that it’s difficult to get a young mind to concentrate on something as mundane as running cable when there is a digital board with loads of lights and buttons sitting in the corner of the room!

Another Sound article! This article was informational and very instructive in the way of making neat and good looking coils for different types of equipment and where it should be. I wonder exactly how this could be applied to theater but this was definitely helpful for concert venue settings. The different types of cables, lighter gauge compared to main cables, and the lengths that should be used for the least amount of coiling was very insightful. I found the end of the article a little bit funny. It felt as thought the author of this article was peeved at people’s poor cabling skills. “By using some common sense, you’ll have more time to make sound, tune the system, and troubleshoot any problems arising by following these ground rules.” While I do think that a lot of this is common sense, sometimes when in different settings, it’s hard to have enough time to make things look neat. Also these aren’t requirements for sound to be executed with proper sound so if it’s not necessary than it might not be a priority.
