'Hamilton' is coming to Pittsburgh. And with it comes the cyber scalpers

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: You know the drill. You follow the rules to the letter and still get shut out of seeing your favorite band or musical the moment tickets go on sale. And if you still want a ticket, there are plenty to be had — on Internet sites selling them for hundreds of dollars above face value.

How weird that I never really realized how much of a problem cyber “bots” can be in buying tickets for different performance events. What a weird problem to have now because of the internet being our main platform for just about everything. It is too bad that, as people are trying to make theatre more accessible for a broader and broader audience, that and issue like this is what trips up tickets to big productions like “Hamilton” from becoming even a little less expensive. It is a good thing, though, that big leaders of the Broadway community in particular like Lin Manuel Miranda are speaking up for issues like this. I know that Hamilton has worked hard to make the production of that show in particular more accessible with things like the ten dollar lottery and special shows for students, and it is great that such a popular show is doing a lot to prevent issues like the cyber ticket buying fiasco.

I hate that this is a thing that can happen in this world. I fully believe that cyber scalping is totally and completely morally wrong. The people who do this are depriving others of an opportunity of to view an art piece. Prices to see shows, even shows in extremely high demand like Hamilton, should never be this high. I thought about this especially when I went to see Kendrick Lamar in concert. Kendrick’s music is for minority groups who are statistically more likely to be below the poverty line. It is completely unfair to create bots that will take tickets away from these people, the people who the art was made for and who the art is most important to. Hamilton is the same way; it has such a diverse cast, written by a non-white person for non-white people. Especially in these cases, I see cyber scalping as completely immoral.
