50 High Schools Rise Above 1,000 Applicants to Claim NBC's R.I.S.E. America Grants

Breaking Character: 50 high schools have risen above 1,000 applicants to claim NBC’s R.I.S.E. America grants. The program – inspired by the network’s upcoming drama “Rise” about a high school theatre department and its effects on a small town – is awarding half million dollars to high school theatre programs across the country.

This sounds like an amazing opportunity for underprivileged high school theater programs to impact the lives of their students and provide more opportunities for them to learn. Although $10,000 is not a whole lot for a school, they could spend it wisely to gain better technology and equipment for their theaters. I came from a performing arts high school, so I had the privilege of having a relatively large budget for each and every show. We had a lot of really great equipment, and something like $10,000 could improve a theater program to be similar to that of a performing arts high school. Unfortunately for most schools, theater is pushed to the side. A lot of donated money goes into sports and sports facilities and things like uniforms because competing with other schools helps to raise the school’s rankings, but theater and the arts are important too. There should be more opportunities for scholarships like these.
