Upcoming Cher Broadway musical to debut at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre next summer
m.axs.com: The musical story about the life and career of Cher will debut under the bright lights of Broadway in the fall of 2018. Before the previously announced "The Cher Show" arrives at New York City’s Neil Simon Theatre however, it will see a limited preview run at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre on June 12 and 15 of next year.

It is a really smart idea for shows that may not be the most critically successful to do an out of town try-out. Shows learn a lot about how their show will be received and potentially can save a lot of money. From what I understand, the Chicago run of SpongeBob was very helpful and also helped create a lot more buzz for the production. I am very confused though, and perhaps it may be a type, but the article states that the Cher musical will do a limited preview run on June 12 and 15. I question the validity of an out of town tryout if it is only for two performances. If a show sits for a few weeks, the creatives and director have the opportunity to make changes and see the audience’s reactions. My one prediction to this is that it may be staged more as a concern and not with full production value.
The char show seems very interesting. First it is smart of them to take this show out of town. For a while shows stopped doing out of town tryouts because of how expensive it is to put up. However, lately more shows are starting to do this again. It is a great idea because as part of the creative team you can see what works and what doesn’t work and you have the time to make changes. On Broadway making significant changes is harder because of money and time. One thing that I am not a fan of is all of these bio/ jukebox musicals. Right now there is the Donna Summers show, there’s a go-go dolls, beautiful and jersey boys, (I am sure I am missing some) I wish there were more real original musicals coming to Broadway. But if this means people who would not see these shows buy tickets I will support these shows.
