While large operas founder, small companies flourish

Crain's New York Business: What could have been a disaster for LoftOpera turned out to be a smashing success. In November, the Brooklyn-based company debuted its version of The Barber of Seville the same week that the Metropolitan Opera was reviving a production of the Gioachino Rossini masterpiece. Rather than overshadowing the tiny company's interpretation, the Met's performance brought it much-needed attention and recognition. The New York Times printed a joint review, praising each effort. Moreover, the Met's general manager, Peter Gelb, attended the LoftOpera premiere.
