The Best Runway During Fashion Week Is This One From Nike Basketball

The GQ Eye: GQ on Style: GQ: That's right, we're calling it early: Nike has outplayed every fashion designer during fashion week. At least when it comes to the runway. This week they unveiled their Zoom City Arena, a 94 by 50-foot LED screen basketball court.

I love giant changing LED floors as much as the next person, but I'm not sure how effective it would be. It is definitely cool, and it is a pretty interesting concept, but when I saw it only one thought came to mind. This is a floor. Even though the audience would be raised up slightly, this floor is definitely most effective when it is seen from a birds eye view, which the audience would not be able to have access to if they were there live. Another important thing about the show is that ideally in a fashion show, the most important aspects are the clothing on the models. But in the clips that Nike showed, you could see the silhouettes of the basketball players but absolutely no detail. This is a general problem with lighting in this way. If the screen is lit up, the lighting designer would have some trouble lighting the models without washing out the images from the screen. I think a giant LED floor is a cool concept, but not in a situation where it can not be the center of attention. When there are people involved, it makes much less sense.

For some reason, I was thinking the letters were going to be able to change, but it just didn’t click into my mind until after IU watched the video a few times, then it dawned on me that it was the court that could change, into whatever the heck the designer wanted. Now how to do that, and still allow a durable surface to play basketball on, and not damage anything is pretty cool. Normally you’re used to seeing giant screens at stadiums, and then I guess if you’re Katy Perry you have just a whole bunch projected media on the ground. The second thing I guess, is if that is a fully structural court that could be played on, or of its just for this event as a runway. Either which way, you normally only see white pristine runways for fashion, so it’s cool to have tricks up your sleeve such as a basketball court to change things up a bit.
