There are two things that make this article so stand out for me. First of all, hearing this mans story is incredible. He was primarily a flame artist until he was literally the last person they could call on to do something else, and now he is in charge of one of the most prominent Effects companies in the industry. This is truly what I think artistry is about. The cross-discipline training is so important, and something I think that is well captured here at Carnegie, because at the end of the day being good at one thing is not as cool as being creatively interested and invested in a lot. Its how you survive in this industry. Were going to be finding work everywhere, doing all sorts of things, and his story really resonates with me. Second of all, I think seeing all the work (the matte painting work, the model work) that went into this film also helps me put into perspective how much lionizing we do to the films we watch. Yes, these are incredible, huge-budget movies. But at the end of the day, those actors were on a prop sled in front of a green screen. Anderson didnt need for them to be tumbling down the German Mounatinside. With some incredible editors and hard work, they turned an ordinary shot into an extraordinary shot. And thats the beauty of this industry (and of Wes Anderson to be honest.)
