CDG Celebrates The Art of Costume Design

Below the Line: On Tuesday evening, costume designers, the stars they dress and the directors they work for, came out to the Beverly Hilton for a magical night to celebrate the art of costume design at the 17th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards.

It’s always wonderful to see other designers supporting each other and genuinely enjoying each other’s company rather than competing against one another. I love the environment of Carnegie Mellon’s School of Drama because it encourages collaboration over aggression. Seeing that this environment exists in the professional world is uplifting especially in costume design which is a field that I am likely to be involved in once out of college. Costume design to me is one of the hardest design programs emotionally because unless you have confidence, the eternal judgment of body image really gets to some people. Support in any art form is always helpful, but especially in theatrical art where the quality of the product heavily relies on the cooperation between designers. Hopefully this wonderful collaboration and support of each other continues in the years to come as it brings the designers together as a community and creates better art as a whole.
