Virtual Color Consultation Yields Trend-Proof Results

Remodeling: Sorry, marsala. Color expert Gretchen Schauffler says of all her 3,000 clients she's never had a single one ask her to put that year's Color of the Year on their walls. "What they will say is, 'my house needs to be refreshed,' or 'I love my house, I just need to make sure it looks updated,'" says the founder of paint company Devine Color. She adds that trend colors like 2015's marsala and 2014's radiant orchid are great for punching up a wardrobe every year, but that the walls of a home should transcend annual trends.

I laughed when I heard that “Color of the Year” was an actual award given to a certain color each year. I especially was baffled when I saw that the color was Marsala. Not only would I never have guessed it would win, I would never make anything marsala colored. It just isn’t a pleasing color for anything. It’s too dark to paint a wall, and too neutral to wear as clothing. For interior design, having a color go in and out of trend within a year is very expensive. If one year a room is marsala based, and the next year that color is considered hideous, the expenses for redoing homes becomes ridiculously high. I agree with the article in that there is a set palette of colors which homeowners use a lot. These are often pastel or neutral tones of beige, yellow, and brown. These earthy colors are warm yet calming.

I love the idea of a virtual consultation, but so often when you photograph places, especially rooms, everything will dramatically change based on the time of day and lighting in the room and the quality of your camera. It makes me wonder how Schauffler deals with that and gives an accurate consultation. I do like how Schauffer works a lot with finding a color pallet that the homeowner really likes and will match what their style is. I don’t pretend to know much about owning a home and repainting and so on, but $249 doesn't sound like that much for consulting with a “color expert” and getting two gallons of name brand paint, as well as 20% off the rest of the order.
Another thing- how is the Color of the Year even chosen. Especially with marsala being the color of the year. It’s such a random ugly color. It’s just generally dull and dark and will make your house look smaller if you start painting it everywhere. I can kind of see how it could be a good accent color, but its so dull. It’s interesting how despite it, and other Colors of the Year are never chosen when Schauffer’s clients talk to her.
