Theater Reviews + Features | Pittsburgh City Paper: And so The Phantom of the Opera has had a facelift. The show is only 26 years old — still running on Broadway, basically unaltered since 1988 — but producer Cameron Macintosh decided to restage and reconceive the touring blockbuster, determined to make it "bigger and better."
Bigger? Not really.
Better? Some might agree.

So when I first heard about this production I had some hesitations. I respect Cameron Mackintosh as a producer and his success; however how he accomplishes it somehow I am weary of. When I talked to people that had seen the original production of Phantom and they disagreed with some of the production aspects. They removed the grand staircase during Masquerade, which in my opinion is one of the most important set pieces in the show and sets the mood of the scale that the production is. Also, they began to incorporate some media aspects into the show, which is reminiscent of what Cameron Mackintosh did with “Les Miserables”, and replaced scenery with projection. Again, like I’ve addressed in a few other posts this week about reimaginations, there is a time and place for them when appropriate, but if the sole purpose is to revitalize the show, then producers should think twice.
