In ASC’s New Order, Art Trumps Technology

Variety: As the 29th annual American Society of Cinematographers awards ceremony approaches on Feb. 15, a look at the feature nominees reveals an encouraging trend: directors of photography say the continued maturation of digital platforms has meant a shift in focus away from technical concerns to more aesthetic matters.

To me, film has always been about the aesthetic or visual presentation of an idea, and technology has always been a means to support a particular vision and bring it to fruition. The fact that art trumping technology is a groundbreaking concept is somewhat confusing. Film is the ultimate visual art, and the product audience sees is the art itself. The audience cannot see the technology and efforts that went into producing the final visual. I always believed that this fact rendered technology secondary to the art.

Also, in terms of supply and demand, some of the largest advances in film technology have been spurred by a need created by an artistic vision. The recent release of Jupiter Ascending really illustrated this process, as new technology was required in order to faithfully capture and present the aerial fight scene as the directors desired. The nature of the industry is such that technology no longer informs an artist's vision but instead rises to meet it.
