Playwrights festival puts Pittsburgh center stage

TribLIVE: Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company's Festival in Black and White: Multicultural Edition offers rewards for playwrights and audiences.

This festival shines a light on Pittsburgh's diverse communities by soliciting scripts from playwrights from any and all cultural backgrounds. The only requirement is that playwrights have lived in the Pittsburgh area for at least two years at some point.

This seems like a great opportunity. The one thing that I am curious about, seeing as I'm not a play write, is the process in which the winner converts a one act into a full length play. Does the playwright deliberately submit a piece that has the potential to be a full length? I know Albees's The American Dream and The Sandbox go together but I also know hey are two separate one acts. There isn't really a through point? Is it similar to Angels in America on a smaller scale? It just seems to me that by turning the winner into a full length, one is valuing the work of the one act less than that of a full length play.
