Sleepy Hollow: Q&A with Costume Designer Kristin M. Burke
clothesonfilm.com: If you watch supernatural cop show Sleepy Hollow on Fox (Universal in the UK), you will definitely know who Kristin Burke is. Her sartorial contribution to the first season has ingrained the series with a handsome, consistent, yet oddly plausible look. We say ‘oddly’ because the show is, for want of a better term, completely batshit crazy; a mix of 18th century drama and modern day X-Files, involving headless horsemen, a tree monster, deadly black vein disease, and all manner of creepy mythology based beasties. It’s terrific fun.

Sleepy Hollow is one of my guilty pleasure shows, but perhaps I should not feel so guilty! This interview with costume designer Kristin M. Burke is a fun and insightful read, as her open responses to the questions are refreshing. Even with the complicated process of sourcing clothes from different periods, Burke makes every challenge sound like an exciting opportunity. This would seem to stem from her positive relationships with other costume designers and the cast and crew of the show. Not that this has particularly to do with costumes of Sleepy Hollow, but it is really nice to see Clancy Brown (from HBO’s ridiculously not-renewed Carnivale) as the mentor of Abbie (Nicole Beharie), even if mostly in flashback. Also, John Noble (from Fringe).
