Profound Effects: Digital Console Processing And FX Capabilities
Pro Sound Web: While it’s still common to see tours carrying racks of outboard processing and effects gear (of analog and digital varieties) for mix enhancement and to optimize certain system facets, the ability of modern digital consoles to provide these same capabilities is changing the game. Overall, the quantity of outboard gear needed to accomplish the same (and more) functionality has lessened, in some cases dramatically.

The amount of effects in board on digital consoles these days is spectacular. I remember from my own experience when we moved from our analogue Soundcraft MH4 to the Digital Vi4 it rendered our racks of outboard gear essentially useless. This is because now all the gear we were using to process our I/O was integrated into the DSP of the console. We had Compressors, Limiters, and Gates on all channels, Graphic EQ, Delay units, 8 channels of Lexicon effects processing, etc., all within arms reach of the engineer. This made making changes to these things on the fly notably more simple.
