The S-shaped Curve – Oh, Geez

Popular Woodworking Magazine: I woke up this morning knowing I had to write a blog post today on the topic of ogees. “Oh, geez,” was my first thought. “I don’t really know what an ogee is.” By noon, after looking at lots of pictures and write-ups, I had determined that an ogee is an S-shaped curve. Simple as that. Why didn’t anyone tell me – before it was already time for a lunch break?

The video (and the article) were very disappointing. I was expecting the video to explain HOW to make an s-shaped curve, not how to copy an ogee that falls inside a triangle! Anyone can do what he did...that's how I would've done it having never watched this video before. I want to know how to make irregular ogees. That's a task that I feel we face a lot int he world, and in theatre. I know round things are the worst to make because all of the sudden all of the measuring goes out the window, give or take a few specific shapes. One day, I want to learn how to make irregular ogees.

I'm afraid I don't really see the purpose of this article. All it really does is show a man's fascination with S-shaped curves. It would have been nice to see anything more about them, or how to make them. However, instead we are left with a rant on what should have just been a personal blog.

I have to say I am with Sam and Ruben on this one. I know from experience that making a good S curve can be annoying to make but this article does not really help me get better at making one. It seems to be setting up for the rest of the article which is not there. At lease now I know that an S shaped curve is called an Ogee.
