USER POLL: What’s Your Favorite Piece of...

EDC is Everyday Carry: There is a part of this site that is about showing off. We like to find that rare or exotic piece of kit, pair it with other cool stuff, and show it off to our fellow gear addicts. It is the same impulse that drives Jay Leno to collect cars or rich CEOs to collect art work. All to often though, this impulse results in tools that live a sheltered existence, used for nothing more taxing than slicing open an envelope. Even worse, some of this gear become shelf queens, lubed, sharpened, and dusted, but never put to work.
Collecting isn’t a bad thing, but these are tools after all.

I personally love all the articles on multitools. Recently, I bought a Leatherman Wave and I'm having a few problems with it. The tool itself is perfectly fine, but it's very heavy in my pocket and weighs me down. Furthermore, it didn't come with a pocket clip, and falls out of my insufficient girl pocket regularly. I was happy that these "problems," albeit minus the female aspect, were brought up in this article. One thing I really like about the Skeletool is that it has a clip on the end. I am a firm believer of the carabiner for keys and other things, and my Leatherman can't do that. My Swiss Army Knife has a small but great blade and a carabiner loop. However, it's rather heavy. The Skeletool mainly appeals to me because the blade is durable, it's more portable, and light. I'm going to look into this!

I like seeing how enthusiastic people get about their multi-tools, I can easily understand how these fairly common object can become trusted companions and have so much attention devoted to them. My personal set of tools has personally gotten me out any number of scrapes, both working and out in the real world. Personally my most trusted companion is a multi-knife set with a regular blade, serrated saw like blade, and a quick change box cutter head. The box cutter gets the most use of them by far, and i wouldn't trade it for another knife in the world. My 8" crescent wrench wrapped in tie-line for a more comfortable hand grip and multi-tool pliers are tied for second in terms of tool importance for me.

I also own a Skeletool and its my favorite Multitool I've had yet. The artical indicates it as a "beefed up knife" but I do think of it as a slimmed down multitool. It has a knife, pliers, screwdriver, and bottle opener/clip. It's really the essentials as a technician. There are very few times during a strike where I say "Hey, I'm really glad I have this metal file or wire crimper, or tiny useless pair of scissors on my multitool." But the screwdriver, pliers, and knife are the perfect combination. I also own a Leatherman Charge TTI which is great for work calls, but for EDC, the Skeletool is my tool of choice.

My favorite piece of EDC gear that I own is the Gerber Shard (http://www.thesurvivalistblog.net/gerber-shard-review/)

I have a shard on every one of my keyrings and I'm so used to it that I use it regularly without even thinking about it. It has no sharp edge, which makes it perfect for air travel or just EDC where you might pass through a metal detector. On an entertainment note, the bottle opener is great for loosening shackle pins on an overtightened shackle. Since it normally lives on my keys, it's tethered to my body during work overhead.

On another side note, I'd love to see more gear posts on the Green Pages.

This article makes a great point. Many people are very into multitools and for some, the bigger the better. I have a leatherman surge myself and it has a huge amount of tools packed into it but honestly I only use the knife, pliers, bottle opener, and screwdriver. Which happens to be the exact tools that the skeletool has. It gets rid of all the junk in a lightweight and convenient package. I might actually pick one up.

At the beginning of the year I always carried my Wave with me, but since leaving it here during winter break, I've stopped wearing it but I don't really miss it. I of course put it on my belt during calls but during the day it stays in my backpack. My EDC is a SOG Escape knife which is great because it has a seatbelt cutter which is great for cutting tie line, which is actually the reason I picked it, a Fisher Space Pen, and, like Frank, a Gerber Shard on my keyring. The Shard is great because it has all of the most important features of a multitool that I might need during normal day to day work.
