Prosound Network: Ten people were indicted this month in connection to a stampede that killed 21 people at the German music festival, Love Parade, in July 2010.
In live entertainment situations where people are injured or especially if life is lost, i must admit I don't fully understand how liability for things that could very quickly fall outside of anyone's control is established. In a situation like this, and i had not heard that this happened before reading this article, it seems that if 1.4 million people showed up to an event that should have only been able to hold a quarter of them, and crowding related injuries ensued it would be hard to lay complete responsibility on any one or small group of individuals, unless of course they had prior knowledge of the conditions that caused this to happen.
I'd think it would be kind of hard not to notice if four or five times the number of people you planned for showed up. These kinds of tragedies frustrate me because they're completely preventable with appropriate planning and oversight. The festival had been held every summer for 20 years, the organizers were clearly experienced. I wonder if there was a particular act that caused so many more people to come but regardless, there should have been systems in place to either limit or monitor the flow of so many people.
