Viola Davis Comments on #MeToo at Power of Women

Variety: On the red carpet for Variety‘s Power of Women New York event Friday, Viola Davis shared her thoughts on the #MeToo movement, its implications, and the lasting effects of sexual assault. “I think the conversation now is people really feel like the impact is just a woman loses her career — it’s way deeper than that,” Davis said. “You lose your life in that moment.”

Viola Davis is a complete hero in my eyes. I love her work, her person, and the inspirational speeches she gives on the rights of not just women but specifically African American women. I think in this article coverage of her thoughts on the MeToo movement are very important and slightly different to what has been most commonly talked about. Viola points out that sexual assault does not only have a huge affect on your career life and opportunities for jobs but it is also incredibly detrimental to your mental health. I think Viola Davis is pointing out that we need to acknowledge all the many negative results of sexual assault, not just focusing the effect on work but on mentality towards yourself and other people. I know that programs exist in helping sexual assault survivors cope with their traumatic experiences but there should be more and they deserve to be more well advertised than they are currently.
