After reading this article, I want to research Black Theatre United and learn more about the gala and the organization's work. This past summer, I had the privilege of participating in the International Black Theatre Festival, an incredible collection of theater from Black Theatre companies all across the country. Although I didn’t get to see many shows other than the one I was working on, the few shows that I did see were incredible and so informative. However, if I didn't have the International Black Theater Festival happening in my hometown every two years, I doubt I would have had much exposure to Black Theater at all. I can’t speak for other people, but I know that we didn’t learn about it in school, and I think that my school wasn’t the only one omitting such an important part of theater history from its curriculum. I hope that organizations like Black Theater United and events like the gala will bring attention to Black theater and give it the spotlight it deserves.
I thought this was really interesting! I had never heard of Black Theatre United, or of their annual galas, but I think they’re doing really important work. Their goal is to provide access, recognition, and opportunities for black and brown artists; this year, the goal of the gala is meant to highlight the support that’s necessary to create a space for black artists. While, unfortunately, I can’t say I’ve heard of many of the guest artists, I think that the work they’re doing is incredibly important, and I think the gala will be an absolute joy for people to attend or view! Overall, I think I would like to try and learn more about Black Theatre United, as well as their mission and the history of their organization; I think that they’re doing really important work, and, especially in today’s political climate, I think it’s really crucial to be able to uplift art and artists everywhere.
