IATSE Lauds Introduction of Motion Picture, Television, and Entertainment Revitalization Act, Urges Swift Passage
IATSE: The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) today applauded the introduction of the bipartisan Motion Picture, Television, and Entertainment Revitalization Act (MPTERA), which would create a federal incentive to level the playing field and bring film and television jobs back to the United States. The bill follows years of IATSE advocacy for a competitive, labor-based federal production incentive.

I haven't heard anything about this bill before now (although I haven't been paying much attention to congress), and have no idea if it actually stands a change of passing or if IATSE is just endorsing it as a matter of principal. However, either way, I am definitely in favor of this, as it builds on tax credits offered by states and municipalities, and will encourage greater filmmaking in the US. I have no issues with other countries doing their own films, but I certainly understand the fear of US workers losing their jobs due to a declining film industry here, and I am always in favor of better job situations for IATSE workers, particularly considering how connected the theater industry and film industries are.
I have been trying to keep following the articles on this blog that have discussed the federal incentive for the past few weeks now, and I found this one by looking at the weekly News Page Mailer for last week. I now know that this incentive’s official name is “The Motion Picture, Television, and Entertainment Revitalization Act” and I know the exact statistics and qualifications written in the incentive. I believe that this incentive will be a huge help to the American filmmaking industry, and the fact that this bill already has bipartisan support gives me hope that it will get passed by Congress soon. However, the goal for this bill is to get passed by the end of the year, so this bill still has a long way to go before it officially becomes law. There is a link to send a letter to Congress asking them to endorse this bill in this article, and over 26,000 letters have been sent so far. I am considering writing a letter myself, but I am a little hesitant because I believe I need to do more research about this incentive to effectively write a letter in support of this cause.
