'Dune' Production Designer Honored With Variety Creative Impact Award

variety.com: Oscar-winning production designer Patrice Vermette will be honored with Variety’s Creative Impact in Production Design Award at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. Vermette is Denis Villeneuve’s go-to production designer. The pair have worked together on “Sicario,” “Arrival” and all three “Dune” movies.

I’ve rewatched Dune many times because of how beautifully the production team has constructed what appears in front of the camera. The artifacts, scenery, and costumes integrate so well with one another that they establish a whole reality. The amount of detail and research put into the design and construction of this world allows each element to seamlessly connect with one another. Now that I know the creative mind behind much of this work is Patrice Vermette, who also worked on Arrival, I’ve started to notice the consistency and craftsmanship he brings to his projects. His recognition at the Savannah Film Festival also drew my attention to SCAD, where I noticed that they offer a variety of resources and areas of focus across entertainment, film, and drama. I find this very interesting, as it is something I’d also like to explore by trying different areas across the industry and experiencing how the creative process and production practices differ between them.

Denis Villeneuve's Dune (and its sequel, which I think I like just a teensy bit more) is a truly magnificent film, and while I'm not the most invested person in the plot (I prefer my movies about white boys going mad in the desert while developing a messiah complex to be four hours long and set on Earth, thank you very much (-; ), they're visual treats that keep me coming back for more every 3 years or so. When he won the Oscar for Dune, I cheered! I've noticed that, even among my friends who couldn't be further from production designers, everyone who has seen Dune or Dune Part II have been careful to note the absolutely beautiful production design. Hearing that Vermette is a workaholic who loves diving into research did not leave me surprised, and as someone who believes that the work before you start drawing is just as important as the drawing itself, his method is very appealing.

The dune movies are some of my favorite movies, and a major part of that is their production design. Good production design is absolutely everything to a movie, it allows audiences and watchers to be completely immersed in the movie and truly get the full experience. In dune, the sets are massive, and you can tell while watching. In some cases it is very easy to tell when a green screen has been used, it always looks a little fake, but with dune, it’s so real. This intense realism mixed with the unrealistic sci-fi world allows audiences to truly be forced to believe that this is the norm that the characters in this world live in. A massive factor of the dune trilogy appeals to me are the visuals. Without them to support the sweeping score, the masterclass acting, and the frankly wacky story, these films would 100% fall short. Instead , when audiences go to see the third one in December, they will be sucked into this incredible world of sand and spice, all thanks to the production design.
