How Vancouver Film School Prepares Students for Industry Jobs

www.hollywoodreporter.com: Inside one of Vancouver Film School’s downtown studios, managing director Jon Bell stands amid a sea of animation students drawing on graphics tablets and glowing screens. The scene illustrates how physical space, digital technologies and human connection have helped position the school alongside institutions such as USC, the American Film Institute and CalArts, without the hefty American tuition fees.

While reading this article, I didn’t immediately understand what made Vancouver Film School’s program different from a traditional college art program. However, once I saw that their students complete concentrated, one year programs instead of four year programs, I understood that this is really a new type of program for education in entertainment careers. I was confused by the one year program thing at first, but now that I think about it, with a lot of your most valuable learning occurring on the job anyway, having a very concentrated one year education is not a bad model. I really like how the program seems to stress simulating a production environment to provide as much hands on experience as possible and show how skills in collaboration and communication are often most important in this industry. I think its incredibly important that these programs be specifically tailored to preparing students for work in the industry, as it is a hard industry to find footing in.
