I remember in high school when we had to do social emotional learning in class and I definitely think I struggled to feel like it had an impact. It felt very impersonal, the lessons that were being taught. It felt hard to apply them to your life and to see them reflected in your life. I think that it’s really cool that this program is taking something that youth can very directly relate to because of how they already listen to it on their own time and they like it on their own time and they already look up to these figures in hip-hop culture. I think this is a really clever way to work with students on their social emotional learning rather than just trying to teach it to them and not really work with students. It feels like it’s including them in their learning by listening to them and understanding what students are actually gonna comprehend and enjoy doing. And I think it's especially important right now as they mentioned in the article for Black and brown kids to be doing social emotional learning so that they are better equipped to handle a world that is really hard on them right now.
