Tarragon’s upcoming show gives audiences a verbatim taste of children’s wisdom, wit, and weirdness

Intermission Magazine: In CHILD-ish, a verbatim play created by Sunny Drake, four actors give voice to over 40 children’s thoughts on everything from love and relationships, to war, to unicorns. The Toronto premiere, directed by Andrea Donaldson and produced by Tarragon Theatre in association with the CHILD-ish Collective, began previews October 21. Actors Karl Ang, Janelle Cooper, Monique Mojica, and Jordan Pettle speak the verbatim words of children, while Asher Rose plays an interviewer on their own journey of discovery.

I am in love with this concept and the care that was taken throughout the whole process. It is so touching to see kinds being listened to and their ideas taken very seriously. I love how they emphasize consent and the way that they were working with children which also made it clear that there were no expectations as to how they should participate. I like that the play includes the character of the interviewer and that they take us on an emotional journey through the show. I really feel that the choice to have the actors be adult in their acting, showing the audience that these kids' experiences are as worthy of being listened to as adults. I also think this show can really make people think about how they think about the world and that it is able to be approached in a different way.
