‘We want to use this as a launchpad’: can A24 also conquer the world of theater?
US theater | The Guardian: On a recent Saturday night in downtown Manhattan, a sold-out crowd at the Cherry Lane Theatre delighted in one of the most bizarre sights in recent New York stage memory: comedian Natalie Palamides, dressed as if in split screen – her left side bedecked in Y2K girl signifiers (butterfly clips, low-rise jeans), her right in bro clothes (cargo pants, flannel) – barreling across the stage and tangling with … herself.

I have loved the work A24 has put out since they got started, and I’m honestly really intrigued about how their work would translate into theater. I think the prospect of having a “live destination where anyone can stop by on any given night and see something engaging and interesting” is awesome, reminiscent of vaudeville theater culture and is definitely something we need more of as a society. I love how A24 is not afraid to make strange, out of the ordinary movies that leave you with more questions than answers, and I think that could be very beneficial to getting people out of the house and viewing new art. I think A24’s occupation of Cherry Lane Theater could easily become culturally iconic. However, I do wonder how the finances of this project will play out. I’m glad to hear they’re doing well so far, and I hope I get to see something at the Cherry Lane in my lifetime!
Oh my gosh I absolutely love A24 movies. It is so exciting to hear that they are expanding into theater! Their works range every genre, with the single connector being their experimental nature. I love this aspect of the indie film company, as they promote movies that push boundaries, and that I would not hear of otherwise. In this way I feel like their work can translate super well to the stage. While they will have to forgo the special effects and multimedia that I see in lots of their pieces, their storytelling can stay the same with adaptation of more practical effects. I think they could also continue some multimedia aspects through their costuming and makeup. I am a little biased with those categories, as I am sure any element of theater can get pretty experimental. Coming from film, I am interested in how A24 will create plays and even how they might incorporate time and live performance into their work.
