'Task' Dialect Coach Susanne Sulby on Teaching the Delco Accent
variety.com: Throughout “Task,” the seven-episode crime thriller that concluded on HBO on Oct. 19, viewers were re-introduced to the specific Delaware County, Pa. accent that they’d perhaps first heard in HBO’s 2021 hit “Mare of Easttown,” from creator Brad Ingelsby. On “Mare,” southeastern Pennsylvanians were generally pleased with the way that Kate Winslet, Jean Smart and especially Evan Peters bravely tackled the sounds of the region.

I’ve always been sort of weirdly fascinated with regional accents and I’m always interested to see how they’re portrayed in media. Because the United States is so large, we have so many regional accents and tiny differences in vocabulary and linguistic patterns and I think taking those differences into consideration when making a piece of media that is region-specific is very important. This is part of the reason why dramaturgy is so important! This article made me realize that dialect coaches are closely related to dramaturgs, like half linguist half dramaturg. I think this would be a very interesting job. Knowing the intricacies of why and how we make the sounds we do, and then being able to teach others how to make those sounds and decide how actors should best speak is a job whose performance can really make or break a piece. Getting the setting of a piece correct is not just visual, but also dependent on what we hear from the characters.
