‘Mexodus’ Tells an Underground Railroad Story You’ve Probably Never Heard
The New York Times: To many people, the story of the Underground Railroad is a familiar one — the secret network that helped runaway slaves in the American South to escape to the North.
That’s certainly the only one Brian Quijada knew. But in 2017 he read an article about the thousands of enslaved people who fled to Mexico in the 19th century.

This musical sounds incredible! I have enjoyed watching how much theatre has evolved through the years, and this musical feels like the future. I found it really interesting how Robinson said that Hamilton did play a huge part in their inspiration, however Mexodus does exist without it. Rap is an incredible way to tell stories, and theatre could definitely utilize that tool more. Some of the greatest artists of this generation, such as Nas, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole, use rap to tell their stories. The fact that the music for Mexodus is produced live onstage every night is incredible. That spontaneity is really interesting, and will be great for drawing in audiences. I saw a clip of Mexodus’ rendition of Wade In The Water, and it was powerful. Quidada’s part of the song is sung in Spanish, and makes the audience look at this story in a different perspective. Overall, this looks like a must see production and an even more important story!
