John Lithgow to Tackle Roald Dahl’s Antisemitism in Broadway ‘Giant’

The New York Times: John Lithgow, a two-time Tony Award winner who has appeared on Broadway more than two dozen times since 1973, will return next spring to star in “Giant,” an acclaimed play exploring one of the most problematic aspects of the storied career of the British children’s author Roald Dahl.

Roald Dahl was honestly a big part of my childhood. I had no idea that he was so antisemetic which definitely ruins the stories he wrote. I am always very cautious about when people write shows that are about someone who was “complex” when what they mean is “They were very [racist, antisemetic, sexist, etc], BUT they were very talented.” I agree that this is something we should talk about, but it almost seems that at times they are trying to get us to sympathize with the person the show/story is about. An issue that I have consistently noticed about society is some people are obsessed with “separating the art from the artist” which can be a good coping mechanism at times, but it allows artists to feel like what they said is “okay” because they were not completely “canceled”, like Harry Potter. JK Rowling is a horrible transphobe and racist person but because the books she wrote were so fundamental to a lot of people’s childhoods/lives, she can keep making money and content without having to worry. I would be interested to see the show and if it sympathizes with Dahl or if it is actually showing that he did some very wrong things and should have been held accountable.
