Broadway Actors Ready for Possible Strike as Negotiations Heat Up

www.hollywoodreporter.com: Members of Actors’ Equity have been going to Broadway stage doors to deliver strike pledge cards and the union board has already voted to authorize a strike, which could shut down dozens of Broadway productions, if it were to come to fruition. More than 1,000 Broadway actors, and bold-face names including Darren Criss, Sean Astin and Alec Baldwin have signed a letter stating their solidarity with Equity.

Increasingly when I read articles like this about the negotiation of union contracts, I always come back to wages and the interests represented in the room during negotiations. When Actors Equity is fighting for better healthcare benefits in particular for this round of negotiations, the pushback they receive from the Broadway League is that despite the highest grossing season in Broadway history, the costs have also risen (notably no musical made a profit), to which ask, who were the highest paid people in the budgets of these musicals and was there really no way of minimizing those costs to ensure they made a profit? This is not hinting at those in the Broadway League purposefully raising their own salaries to make this happen, but moreso asking if the distribution of wealth within the structure of these shows (and ultimately between shows and the managers of the buildings that are a part of the Broadway League) is best supporting an equitable wage for all of those who are involved. If not, maybe that is what needs to be addressed rather than continuously fight over union contracts.
