The Best Bay Area Theater We Saw in 2024

KQED: There’s no denying that theater continued to face massive obstacles in 2024. With audiences still choosing to stay home in large numbers, fundraising campaigns were often as common as season announcements, while consequential closures of legacy institutions stung the ecosystem as a whole.

Wow, reading about Bay Area theater in 2024 really feels like a rollercoaster. How incredible is it that, despite all the challenges—audience hesitancy, funding struggles, and even closures—so many productions still thrived? The creativity and resilience of these companies just blow my mind. The Glass Menagerie at SF Playhouse seems like a masterclass in making old stories feel brand new. Finding modern relevance in classics is such a skill, like mixing timeless text with today’s conversations about identity, race, and class. It’s giving the same energy as artists reimagining Shakespeare with contemporary twists—such a vibe!
