Maria by the numbers: How many wigs, costumes did Angelina Jolie use?

GoldDerby: Pablo Larraín‘s latest feature film “Maria” is written by Steven Knight and tells the story of world-renowned opera singer Maria Callas, as portrayed by Oscar winner Angelina Jolie (“Girl, Interrupted”). The Netflix biopic has been receiving awards buzz since it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival earlier this summer, and now we have a much better idea about the extreme lengths Larraín’s team took in order to recreate Callas’ fascinating world.

I really appreciate articles like this that call attention to the invisible work that designers, assistants, and technicians are putting into projects such as Maria by Pablo Larraín. It is very commonplace for performers and directors to get the majority of public praise for a piece. This is no one’s fault as they are the faces and names that are at the forefront of a project. However, there is a lot more work put into a performance than just the people on screen. One of the most unnoticed areas is wigs and costuming. A lot of people won’t notice that someone’s hair doesn’t match the period, yet they would if it wasn’t there. This is a dilemma that a lot of creatives face: a bad job will get noticed negatively and a great job might go completely unnoticed (even if that’s the intent). So, having articles and media that point out how much time and effort went into the wigs for only one person allows for a little more appreciation of everyone else who worked on a movie like Maria.
